December 9, 2017: It would be interesting some day to be able to read Обзоръ новгородской губерніи (1870-1916). Two volumes are missing (1883, published in 1884, and 1906, published in 1907) but the existing 44 volumes cover the interesting decades leading up to the revolution in 1917. Only the last nine years have tables of contents.
March 9, 2012: Finereader Professional version 10 has support for Russian and Russian (Old spelling). The former is one of the "languages with dictionary support", but the latter is found under "additional languages" and does not have dictionary support. This means that it only contains an extended character set, but no dictionary. And when OCRing and checking spelling, you can't add words that contain old letters to the dictionary. Therefore, do the following:
- Under "document languages" (to the left), select "more languages", "specify languages manually" and open "user languages". There, click "New" and create "My old Russian" based on "Russian (old spelling)". This will bring the extended recognition character set. Now click "user dictionary", so you can add words containing such old letters to the recognition dictionary.
- Activate both "Russian" (having the standard dictionary) and "My old Russian" when recognizing the document. Start to recognize a few pages. Include the table of contents, if there is one, because it often contains many names and terms that are unqiue to the document. After a few pages have been recognized, use "check spelling", which gives you a chance to add words to the dictionary. This will help the continued recognition of the rest of the document.
- After the entire document has been recognized, step through all pages to see that the zoning is correct, especially for column and table layout. After you have adjusted the zoning, you can click "read", which will re-interpret the changed pages.
- Finereader Professional can "save as" PDF and PDF/A, but not Djvu. When saving, under "options", you should set "default paper size" to "Keep original image size". If you set "automatic", you risk ending up with A4 (210x297 mm) images with wide white margins. If you need Djvu output, fortunately the text layer survives conversion with pdf2djvu.
