Charles Smith and Truth Seeker.[править]

Truth Seeker was founded in 1873 as a forum for free thought and atheism. It was part of what Jennifer Michael Hecht has called “evangelical atheism,” led by people who were convinced that they had an obligation not just privately to doubt God’s existence but to convince others to abandon their religious beliefs.45 Between 1937 and 1964 it was edited by Charles Lee Smith. The son of a Methodist minister. Smith had been converted to free thought by reading Thomas Jefferson’s writings. In the 1920s, Smith became a distributor and writer for the Truth Seeker and was arrested several times by New York authorities for doing so. He founded the American Association for the Advancement of Atheism (4A) in 1925, which enjoyed a small amount of notoriety for its aggressive stance toward religious leaders. 4A sponsored a series of lectures, the Ingersoll Forum, in New York City, where speakers would discuss science and religion or debate well-known ministers. In addition to his activities in New York, Smith was arrested for blasphemy in 1928 while distributing pamphlets in Arkansas promoting atheism and criticizing the state’s antievolution laws. The charges against him were eventually dropped, but not until a long series of court appeals and a hunger strike by Smith. In 1931, Truth Seeker editor George E. MacDonald wrote that Smith was “a man with no sense that enables him to detect defeat. He has lectured and been hissed, debated and lost the decision, taken the aggressive and been repulsed, agitated and landed in jail, talked Atheism and been convicted of blasphemy, attempted the enlightenment of a prophet of God and been fined for his pains.”46

While it was not apparent from the first fifteen years of his editorship. Smith was the heir to a particular brand of Darwinism that combined atheism with racism. In this he followed ideas first expressed by a French writer, Vacher de Lapouge (1854-1936), who, along with Arthur Keith, had been a corresponding member of the Galton Society. Lapouge and Nordicists who followed him, most notably Hans F. K. Guenther, founded a science he called anthroposociology. An outspoken atheist, Lapouge had no patience for Chamberlain’s and Gobineau’s emphasis on a “race-soul.” Anthroposociology was completely materialist and rejected any and all appeals to any sort of quasi-religious mysticism. For Lapouge, the science spoke for itself and had no need for any other concepts, and certainly not for any religious or moral ideas. He called for the elimination of all moral sentiment that would stand in the way of a massive breeding program that would eliminate racial inferiors. In his writings, Lapouge warned that sentimentality, especially religious faith, blocked the necessary social reforms for the elimination of racial inferiors through selective breeding. Like Ernst Haeckel in Germany, Lapouge rejected all religion and all morality and called for a strict breeding program that left no room for environmental improvements. For Lapouge, the only solution to the racial crisis would be the elimination of the inferior races.47

Like Lapouge, Smith believed that atheism and racism were flip sides of the same coin. By far the most outspoken of Truth Seekers writers, Smith was a Nordicist of enough repute to have been a featured speaker in the Teutoberger Forest along with Cox.48 Smith left a very complete record of his particular ideology in Sensism: The Philosophy of the West, a sprawling, sixteen-hundred-page work he published in 1956.49 Shot through with neologisms and often shy of coherence, Sensism proclaimed that the spiritual realm had no meaning other than in people’s minds, and that sense data were the only source of meaning for human activity.50

Of more significance for Smith’s philosophy were his criticisms of the concept of equality. Smith argued that Christianity’s doctrine of spiritual equality was not rational, in the present political climate, obvious physical differences were swept away in favor of easy “brotherhood of man” slogans. This was a danger to clear thinking and racial self-preservation, Smith argued, because “[t]his religion conditions its accepters against self-protection” by denying the justice of racial and ethnic discrimination."51 Smith argued that communism and Christianity were both committed to equality and therefore equally dangerous. “The Christian Gospel and the Marxian message is equalism,” Smith declared. “With the decline of faith in the Bible ... it was inevitable that equalism . . . would be expressed in the form of Communism.”52

The result was that religion and communism blocked rhe biological advancement of the human species. Social progress toward equality was destroying rhe biological basis of civilization. “Social progress is racial debasement,” according to Smith. “If universal amalgamation occurs, if the White race disappears, it may never reappear. . . . The Jew-led equalise are marching to world-wide conquest.”53 By contrast, those who were rational “would not save a human being so defective as to have no physical potentialities of intellectual or moral achievement.”54

When he brought his ideas to the pages of his journal, Smith trimmed the turgid prose of Sensism and laid bare his underlying anti-Semitism. For Smith, as for Cox, Christianity was a “Jewized” religion that caught the brotherhood of man, an “equalizing" doctrine that prohibited clear thinking about race. For example, Smith rejected the notion that racial segregation as practiced in the American South was the answer to racial problems, for “seepage of blood through social barriers is inevitable. . . . The final remedy is not segregation but gradual reduction, leading to virtual elimination, which Christians, from fear of everlasting pain, dare not practice.”55

Clearly, Smith argued, all lives were not equal, and some lives, notably those of Negroes, were not worth living. The most logical solution to the country’s problems was “legalizing and subsidizing abortion to prevent the birth of a mulatto or a Negro." Blinded by the “Jew-led Love mongers,” Smith wrote, Americans “simply cannot discriminate; having lost the use of their senses in judging others, they obey words absolutely. . . . They are Jewized." Of particular concern for Smith were “certain professors at some of our universities” who taught the “propaganda” that “Nordics and Negroes are equal in mental and moral qualities.” Smith declared, “Whoever coldly considers the race problem must conclude that the preservation of rhe white race requires a reduction of the percentage of Negroes,” and he demanded that “each state should establish a race commission to supervise racially therapeutic birth control and abortion.”56

Under Smith’s editorship, Truth Seeker lost a significant portion of its readership, as few atheists were willing to follow Smith, who subtitled the magazine “The Journal for Reasoners and Racists” and renamed rhe Ingersoll Forum the “Racist Forum.” The Racist Forum’s speakers included not only the stable of Truth Seeker writers but also political activists from the neo-Nazi underground such as James Madole, the leader of the National Renaissance Party.

Formed in 1949 by Frederick Charles Weiss, an admirer of Nazi Germany who was closely allied with von Leers’s group of expatriate Nazis in Argentina, the National Renaissance Party (NRP) was rhe first postwar neo-Nazi organization in the United States.57 Madole was, in many ways, a front man for Weiss but was responsible for much of the writing that appeared in the National Renaissance Bulletin, which was funded in part by Truth Seeker. Madole himself was praised by George Lincoln Rockwell, the leader of rhe American Nazi Party, as a “brilliant theorist” who produced an “excellent newsletter.”58

The NRP enjoyed the dubious honor of being investigated by the House Committee on Un-American Activities. The committee outlined the avowed program of the NRP, which included the elimination of any parliamentary system, destroying Jewish power, and rhe complete subservience of the individual to the needs of racial nationalism. The committee concluded chat “rhe program and propaganda of the National Renaissance Party is virtually borrowed wholesale from the Fascist and Nazi dictators.”59

Madole argued that the NRP was “erected on the solid immutable laws of Nature which have governed the universe throughout eternity.” Racial inequality and the natural racial struggle for survival were being drowned out by “the man-made doctrines of liberal democracy, socialism and communism,” all of which were ‘'invariably promoted by Jewish intellectuals.” Madole pointed out that “many of the world’s leading scientists, historians and philosophers have opposed the doctrine of racial equality but have been buried in a blanket of silence by our Jewish-con-trolled publishing industry, press, cinema, and television networks.”60 After Madole’s appearance at the Racist Forum was covered by the New York Daily News, the owners of the venue canceled future reservations for Smith’s group. Smith claimed chat “Jewish pressure . . . blocked the Racist Forum.” His associate editor, Robert Kuttner, agreed and argued, “Our Jewish enemies love to paint themselves a glorious red, white, and blue, but it is notable that they are rhe ones who speak constantly of censorship and thought-control.’’61

« Когда провинциальные советы вскрывали «нетленные», высоко чтимые народом мощи, — народ отнесся и к этим актам совершенно равнодушно, с молчаливым, тупым любопытством. Вскрытие мощей производилось крайне бестактно и часто в очень грубых формах — с активным участием инородцев, иноверцев, с грубым издевательством над чувствами верующих в святость и чудотворную силу мощей. Но — и это не возбудило протестов со стороны людей, которые еще вчера преклонялись перед гробницами «чудотворцев». »
