My dear Kenworthy,
Olga Konstantinovna1 has received a letter from Anna Tchertkoff, in which the latter says that you have advertised, or published in the papers that you are authorised to publish my works, or something to that effect. For fear this should lead to misunderstanding, or undesirable complications, I write at once to remind you of what I said at Pirogovo, namely, that I had already handed over all business matters connected with the publication of my works to Vlad[imir] Tchertkoff and therefore, that though I was very pleased that such a serie of publications, as you suggested, should be brought out under your auspices, yet such authority as I felt myself able to give, could only be given subjected to Tchertkoff’s approval.2
It follows that as far as I am concerned you have no authority to act in this matter without the full consent of Tchertkoff. I hope you will come to a complete understanding with him.
I am repeating the content of this letter to Tchertkoff. I have written a little preface to Anatomy of Misery,3 but before sending it to you I wish to read the book once more. If you have a disposable copy please send it to me.
